~ WW1 Aerial Flechette Dart ~ It has a circular section to the front with a pointed tip & cruciform tail section to aid stability in flight. First World War flechettes were principally in use from 1914 through to the early part of 1916. They were dropped on troop and cavalry formations during the war. The needle-sharp missiles were carries in canisters slung under the fuselage and were released by a trigger located in the cockpit. Dropped from an altitude of 1,500 feet, a flechette could go completely through the body of a horse. But such primitive aerial arms soon gave way to far deadlier weapons. ~ Dimensions ~ The piece has 4.75 inches (12cm) in length with the diameter of 0.4 inches (0.65cm). ~ Condition ~ The piece is in good condition a with very sharp tip. ~ Postage ~ UK postage is £8 or can be collected from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
