Circa 1860/70 "Colt" 'Extra American' percussion revolver.

This was an unauthorized piece made in Belgium and was based on the 1851 Colt Navy .36" - please see the end of the listing for further details.

The top of the barrel is stamped "COLT EXTRA AMERICAN".

The pistol comes with a book, entitled "The Restorer's Handbook", a c1970s book that covers repair on Flintlocks, Percussion Hammers, Frizzens, Locks on pistols.

~ Dimensions ~

The case, no doubt an old cutlery one, has a width of 14 inches (35.5cm), a depth of 7 inches (17.75cm) and a height of 2 inches (5cm).

The pistol has a barrel that measures 5 inches (12.75cm) long, and measures 11 inches (28cm) overall.

The set weighs 1.65kg.

~ Condition ~

The hammer will not cock properly & the cylinder won't turn. This is down to the hammer being a poor replacement as is the front site. The rest of the revolver is in very good order.

UK postage for the pistol is £15, or it can be picked up from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

~ Belgian "Colts" ~

It is of historic interest, made in Europe to fool someone that it was an authentic Colt.

On the basis of a Belgium patent taken in October 1849, Colt's designs pertaining to the lock frame and loading lever, and to certain other features, were fully protected. A Liege gunmaker acted as Colts representative in Belgium charging a 10 Franc royalty for Colt licensed copies to be sold in Europe. Despite the difficulties presented by the Belgium arms trade, fees were still being collected as late as the 1860's. Documentary evidence, augmented by an examination of copies of the period indicates that the number of Colt approved arms was only a small proportion of the total Belgium production of infringements. Payment & Lay Away: Card payments can be taken over the phone. We do not take Paypal. We can do lay away terms by agreement. Generally we ask a 20% deposit and the balance to be paid within 2 months. Part exchange is often a possibility.
