Description

H&A Ranger No. 2 –5 shot .32 calibre rim fire spur trigger revolver with green marbelled grips. H&A offered their revolvers with a variety of grip panels including, walnut, rosewood, ivory and mother-of-pearl. Models with marbelled grip panels are very scarce (reference: Hopkins & Allen Revolvers & Pistols by Charles E. Carder).

Hopkins & Allen produced many spur trigger revolvers, most were made under “Trade Names”, without any reference to the maker, most were simply stamped with a trade name, for example; Dictator, Bull Dog, Czar, Essex, Expert, Hinsdale, Pointer, and so on. In the late 1800’s it was commonplace for sales distributors to purchase firearms from makers with their own trade names marked on them.

In later years Hopkins & Allen began marking their “Trade Name” revolvers with their own manufacturing reference, name and patent dates, this is one such revolver.

The top strap is stamped in three lines:

HOPKINS & ALLEN M’F’G’ Co

PAT MARCH 28 1871

RANGER NO. 2

Measures approximately 6 ¾ inches long with a 2 and ¾ inch round barrel, with a 1 and 3/16 inch fluted cylinder.

Mechanically, this revolver cycles the cylinder very well. The trigger spring is strong, as is the main spring and the arbour pin locking spring. Only snag is, it’s missing the lock-up bolt.

Cosmetically, the original nickel finish is around 95% and turned to a milky white.

Serial number 8697 stamped on the left side of the frame (under the marbelled grip), with 8697 stamped on the cylinder and on the underside of the barrel.

All-in-all a nice example, I hope my pictures tell the story.
