Credited with starting (probably erroneously) and putting down the Indian mutiny, it was also widely exported to both sides in the US civil war with over 900,000 being exported from Birmingham and London based contractors. The P53 also had a pivotal role in the Crimean war. This is an outstanding example of a P53 2nd Patten musket. The 2nd model features include a stronger stock, a heavier hammer and changed spring retained barrel bands. All Incorporated after Crimean War Combat experience and Soldier feedback. These modifications alleviated stock breakages when bayonet fighting (stronger stock), the occasional "fail to fire"(heavier hammer) and barrel bands getting caught up on equipment. The sprung bands had the additional advantage of making the P53 very easy and quick to strip and clean with the removal of only three bolts and three slide off bands required for complete action disassembly. This rifle was made by Tower in 1855. Condition wise, it is one of the best example of a P53 I have seen, with a pristine bore and excellent nipple. No rust or pitting is present anywhere on the rifle, it displays a wonderful bright metal finish to the barrel and the lock works perfectly on half and full cock. The stock is undamaged and in fantastic condition. Even the body bolts are in pristine condition, with no over tightening marks or burring present. Antique Obsolete Calibre. No Licence required.
